Kaden Cassidy
sweeps 2 divisions to take two GOLD medals!!!
| |
 |
Kaden Cassidy
wins yet again, going 4-0 and taking 2 Gold medals
at the "Pittsburgh Jiu-Jitsu Championships!!!"
This kid is on a
roll, taking Gold in every tourney he's been too, at least 1 per
month!!! Thanks go to assistant instructors Allen Coble
and his dad, Darren Cassidy, for getting him ready (and getting
him to the tourneys!) [VIDEO]
|
|
|
And yet again, the
paper tigers are running from Bruce, "the unchokable" Monroe!
Bruce was slated to
fight in Gladiator, but his opponent dropped out, claiming he
broke his ankle. It was later revealed that this coward
actually fought in another event the same day!!! Then
he apparently claimed on his myspace page that he was "the
future of MMA." What a coward, what a joke.
Bruce would've destroyed the punk. That's probably why he
ran away. The backup fighter said he couldn't make weight.
This now makes over 20 fighters drop out so far against Bruce!
wow

[Sept 2008]
Brett Hicks and
Kaden Cassidy
take the GOLD on the Battleship!
| |
 |
Kaden Cassidy,
does it again, taking Gold at the "Battle at the Battleship" in
NJ!!! Kaden went 3-0 in the gi divisions, and 2-1 in no-gi.
Yet again, the ref's
stopped the finals no-gi match as Kaden was working an escape;
apparently in the kids divisions, they'll stop matches quickly
and don't want to "risk" any injuries. [VIDEO]
Brett Hicks
went 3-1 to take the Gold in gi blue belt division,
continuing his winning streak! [VIDEO] |
|
|
Also thanks go to
assistant instructors Allen Coble, Darren Cassidy, and Brad
Souders for helping getting the guys ready!
Great job,
everyone!!!

Brandon Vera
prepares for Jardin!
PA-Grappling head instructor Eric Grove has been spending the
weeks at Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts Academy in MD, where seemingly
every upper-tier student is a national if not world-caliber competitor
and champion! Just recently the UFC was there to film Brandon Vera for a new "UFC Countdown" episode in anticipation
of Vera's fight with Jardin!

|
In other news, our
friend and former student Charlie Brenneman suffered his
first loss, a tough questionable decision loss to John Howard in the ROC.
Charlie dominated the takedown, but did suffer some punishment
on his feet and nearly got caught on the ground once or twice,
though was able to ward off the submissions. The best way
to make sure you never lose a decision is to never let it go
to one; knock out or tap out your opponent, then it won't be
an issue. We're sure Charlie will keep working hard and
hopefully move up the MMA ranks. |
 |
This may reflect a trend to come, a change in the
judging in MMA. For the last many years, as MMA has become
more mainstream and "user-friendly," the criteria for scoring has
changed just as the rules have. It got to the point where you
could get relatively easy victories if you were a wrestler, just by
taking down the opponent (many of whom apparently don't know what a sprawl
is), and holding them there. Throw a few punches to make it look
like you're doing something, and you'll get a safe and easy decision
victory. This is something wrestlers everywhere have been doing
for several years in MMA, and have been rewarded for it. This is
ironic, since either punches or submissions will actually end a fight,
whereas the takedown usually only changes position... yet it has been
given more judging importance than striking or submission (which
actually end fights). This is probably a combination of
ignorant judges, and an ignorant/drunk/ADHD audience who want to see
"action" more than actual technique or strategy. The lowest common
denominator supersedes truthfulness in determining how things go it
seems. Perhaps striking and ground work will start to get as much
credence as the takedown.
[Sept 2008]
Yoder, Morelli,
Seger and Cassidy ALL TAKE GOLD!!!
A group of PA-Grappling competitors attended the "Podara's
Boa Pit Grappling Open," where everyone medaled and came back with the
"Most Supportive School" award!
Dave Yoder continued his winning streak, taking
the Gold in the Advanced Division.
Spike Morelli made his competition debut, taking
the Gold in the Advanced (yes, his debut was in the advanced
division!)
Chase Seger continued his win streak, going
2-0 with an 9 second armbar, also taking
Gold!
Kaden Cassidy took Gold in two divisions, both the
Gi and no-Gi!!! One of Kaden's matches only lasted 9 seconds! Look for this kid to be on TV in 10+ years!
And Nick Brosius went 1-1 to take the Silver
Medal.
 |
|
Nick Brosius,
Spike Morelli,
Kaden Cassidy,
Dave Yoder, and
Chase Seger return
with Gold Medals after dominating at recent submission tourney.
Click each name to watch their matches.
AWESOME JOB GUYS!!!
Good things come to
those who train... AND KEEP TRAINING! |
[Aug 2008]
Bruce Monroe
takes the Gold Medal in submission-only event!
| |
 |
Bruce Monroe
went 3-0 to take the Gold Medal at the "Ground Zero Fighting
Systems" submission-only tournament in Morgantown, VA on Aug
16th!
Bruce has had trouble
getting fights this summer, so he took this tourney in only a
week's notice, just to keep the rust off... and went in and
controlled the takedown, dominated ground positioning, and
submitted his opponents!
Way to go, Bruce!!! |
|
|
|
[Aug 2008]
Kaden Cassidy
takes the GOLD at NAGA!!!
| |
 |
Kaden Cassidy,
son of PA-Grapping striking instructor Darren Cassidy,
went to his first ever submission grappling competition
(after only having trained in submission for several months),
and brought back Gold and Silver medals from the National
caliber tourney NAGA!!! (NJ NAGA)
Kaden had also
never worn a gi before, yet controlled the takedown,
dominated position, and tapped out all opponents! (even
our kids students are multi-dimensional and good in ALL ranges
and skills!) |
|
|
His only "loss" a
very questionable referee stoppage in the no-gi finals, where
the ref stopped the match and arbitrarily gave a decision
victory to the opponent (even though Kaden had landed the
takedown!) We offered to start back w/ the hold on and
resume the match, but the opponent's team were content to take
this very suspect "win."
AWESOME JOB, KADEN!!!

[July
2008]
PA-Grappling ...turning "regular guys" into champions!
PA-Grappling moves past 2
1/2
years since it's founding. We've been busy producing some of
the best grapplers and fighters in the northeast.
So far, we're 21-1 in
MMA, quite a feat considering we've had well over 15 opponents
drop out, so we could easily be over 30-1! (and in our only
loss our guy had his first ever competition against a BJJ blue-belt
who'd also had over 20 Muay Thai fights! I'd call that a bit
of a mismatch!)
In submission
wrestling, we have won over 50 victories and dozens of medals.
When we go to a tourney, our guys almost always medal, placing in
the top 3.
In both MMA and
submission grappling, we've competed and won in the highest levels
of competition, from regional to national caliber MMA fights and
submission tournaments. Every single month we're out there
improving, competing, and winning!
Probably the most
impressive feat is that our students are regular guys,
with families, jobs, and "regular" lives, many with no martial arts
or even competitive sports backgrounds... yet they come in,
improve, and when they compete, they win. How...?
First, they actually show up. And keep showing up. They
get honest. And work on what needs improved. And they
keep working! The
instruction might have something to do with it too...

Head instructor Eric
Grove was was one of the first people grappling and fighting
from the east coast, competing and winning numerous National
titles in MMA and submission wrestling before it was even called
"MMA," all across the continental USA. Our striking coach
Darren Cassidy has boxed and kickboxed all over North
America, being Nationally ranked for years. And
Allen Coble's sports training and conditioning knowledge is
world-class. Superior knowledge, superior experience, and
superior teaching, training, and strategies yield superior
improvements and eventually, superior students.
Good things come to those who
train... And KEEP training!!!
[June 2008]
Dave Yoder takes
3 medals in the Diamond State Games!!!
| |
 |
Dave Yoder
went out to DE and came back with 2 Gold and 1 Bronze medal in
the Intermediates of the
Diamond State
Games submission grappling championships, sponsored by US
Grappling! Dave went 6-1 on the day, winning in both his
division and two Absolute open weight classes!
Great job, Dave!!! |
|
|
|
| |
Bruce Monroe
had a big let-down, trying to
find someone who will fight him! Bruce went all the way out to NL
Fighting in OH, but his opponent apparently had heart palpitations
during the medical exam, so Bruce lost another opportunity to increase
his MMA record. He'll keep at it, though!
Taking into account all the
opponents who have dropped out or canceled, Bruce could easily be 10-0
by now. We'll keep trying to find someone for him to fight! |

[June 2008]
Carlton Haselrig
wrestling seminar at PA-Grappling!
| |
 |
Our friend Carlton Haselrig
put on a clinic for local high school wrestlers recently.
Carlton is a world-class competitor, the only person ever
to win 6 NCAA National titles in the sport!
Carlton will soon
defend his MMA title in the BattleCage Xtreme, before moving up
the ranks of Elite XC.
Best of luck,
Carlton! |

[May 2008]
Training with
some of the world's best at Lloyd's!
PA-Grappling head instructor
Eric Grove recently visited his old stomping grounds,
Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts Academy,
where it seems everyone is a world-caliber fighter and grappler!
| |
Brandon "the Truth" Vera was in town, looking sharp
and devastating, especially with his striking. Even at
half intensity, Brandon's kicks were rocking his pad-holders.
Can't wait to see him in the UFC in a few weeks! |
 |
|
 |
Dominick Cruz
was there to help peak for his WEC fight, which he won last
night! Congrat's to Dominick!
New Lloyd Irvin
team member and BJJ phenom J.T. "Spiderman" Torrez was
training with Ryan Hall and the guys to help peak for the
Mundials, the BJJ worlds. JT is only 18, and has already
achieved his BJJ brown belt -- in only 2yrs, 8 months!
Mike "the Hulk"
Easton was training as hard as ever, preparing for the
worlds and seen recently winning on the "Iron Circle."
ADCC vet Tim Carpenter was there to help the guys
prepare. I also met 18 yr old LIMMA fighter Frank
Cammacho, who is already 12-2 in MMA! Mike's
sister Nyjah was getting ready for the world's as well.
There were just so many world-class fighters and
grapplers at Lloyd's; the "average" student there was a national
caliber wrestler, fighter, or grappler! It's amazing to
train in such an atmosphere.
Until you've done
it, you have no clue! |
 |
|
[May 2008]
Juan Robles and
Matt Rakar take Gold at the Kumite!!!
| |
 |
A team from
PA-Grappling recently competed in the Kumite Classic submission
grappling tourney.
Juan
Robles demonstrated his well-rounded grappling skills,
landing takedowns, and an array of ground positioning and
control. This was well-deserved, as Juan has gotten some
very dubious ref's in the past, and has been cheated victory,
moving up ahead of time to more advanced divisions. This
time Juan brought home the Gold! |
|
|
Matt Rakar
made his competition debut , scoring the Gold
in the heavyweight division!
|
| |
Dave Yoder moved
up to the Advanced bracket going 2-1 for the Bronze.
Brett Hicks got caught
with a quick ankle-lock in his first match, but still managed to work
his way back to the Bronze in his division. |
 |
|
Jimi O'Brien suffered a tough loss, and had to settle for the
Bronze Intermediates, losing in the finals to an opponent he's beaten twice
in the past.
Way to go, guys!!!
Hard work, discipline, dedication and honesty pay off! Great job!
[April 2008]
Tony Villella
takes the Bronze despite broken thumb!!!
| |
 |
Tony Villella
recently
competed in the "Mission Submission" grappling tourney in
Frostburg, VA.
Despite breaking
his thumb during a match, Tony was still able to pull out a
3rd place Bronze! That's toughness, folks!!!
Way to go
Tony!!! |
|
|
|

[April 2008]
Carlton wins MMA
debut in BattleCage Xtreme!!!
| |
 |
Carlton Haselrig wins
2 belts in his MMA debut by TKO over IFL veteran Shane Ott in
BatleCage Xtreme on the 19th in Atlantic City!
Carlton controlled
the takedown, countered Ott's submission attempts, and pounded
him into submission, taking the victory in 4min of round 1.
Carlton debut fight was well-rounded, controlling the fight in
all ranges, winning two belts in one impressive victory! |
|
|
Expect BIG THINGS
from Carlton -- this is just the beginning. He has the
potential to go to the world-level in MMA.
newspaper article |
 |
[March 2008]
Carlton Haselrig
training at PA-Grappling!
| |
 |
If you don't know who
Carlton Haselrig is,
he is
a world-class athlete and competitor, being the only person to
ever win 6 NCAA National wrestling titles, winning 3 in Div II
and 3 in Div I. After only 3 years of professional
football (though having never played in college), Carlton was an
All Pro offensive guard with the Pittsburg Steelers.
Carlton is a world-class wrestler, and is working out at
PA-Grappling to shore up his striking and tighten up his
submission defenses.
Carlton makes his MMA debut in "BattleCage Xtreme IV" in
Atlantic City on April 19th against IFL veteran Shane Ott. |
|
Carlton brings great
attributes, world-class wrestling skills and technique,
professional-level competition experience, and an undeniable work-ethic
all together. Carlton will be really tough to beat in the cage!
[March 2008]
Bruce Monroe
wins again in the cage!
Bruce Monroe
wins in MMA again!
| |
 |
On Saturday, March
8th, Bruce Monroe fought in OH in the "Throwdown at the
Fairgrounds" event, winning a
unanimous decision victory! Bruce landed plenty of leg
kicks, scored several takedowns, and controlled the ground
game, pummeling his opponent for another victory.
Good job Bruce! |
|
PA-Grappling bigmen Bruce and Jeff
Rembold have gone through literally 12 fighters and 4 different
events in the last several months trying to get fights...
Hopefully Jeff will be on a card sometime this summer. We look
forward to seeing more of them in the cage!
[March 2008]
Chase Seger and
Brett Hicks medal at the Arnold's !!!
Two students from
PA-Grappling competed in the NAGA-run Arnold Grappling tourney, taking
home the Gold and Silver!
| |
 |
Chase Seger,
making his submission grappling competition debut, goes 4-0,
submitting 3 of his opponents, and takes first place Gold!
Chase has been training for only 6 months! (though he does
private lessons with Head Instructor Grove as well)
Brett Hicks
also returned to competition after several years away from the
scene, taking the Silver in his division! |
|
Congratulations to both guys,
and to assistant instructor Allen Coble and to Dave Yoder
for helping them peak for this event!
In years past, the "Arnold Classic" had deteriorated in reputation,
respect, and the caliber of competition, largely due to being poorly
run. However this year it looked like many top notch schools have
started to return. Hopefully this continues, so that it may become
one of the tougher tourneys like Grappler's Quest and NAGA, giving local
grapplers a place to test their progress.
[Feb 2008]
"...then you
just might be a Phony, Tough Guy Clown!!!"
It's amazing how everyone,
everywhere is suddenly an expert at grappling, fighting, and MMA!
We've all seen and had the pleasure of hearing the amazing exploits of
these instant tough guys. So here's a compilation, a humor segment of some
of everyone's favorites... A Top 10 List!
| |
Honorable Mention:
If your
“public biography” says you do BJJ, all you need to learn for
your “upcoming fight” is “that one move where you put your legs
around their arm, or something, and go something like this or
something, then you think it goes something like this…” ...then you might be a phony, tough guy
clown!!!
If you’ve given YOURSELF a nickname to embody your fighter
prowess, such as Buzzsaw, Meatgrinder, Thunder and/or Lightning,
or the dreaded Angel of Death
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
You claim to be a BJJ Blackbelt, yet google can't find 1 legit
title or accomplishment on you
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
If you spend more
time at the keyboard than in the ring or on the mats
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
If you
can’t compete because you can’t find a cup big enough
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
And the Top 10...
10. If you have TAPOUT shirts, shorts, socks, bandana,
underwear, cup, and toilet paper
(and even better, you don't even compete!)
...then you might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
9. You don’t compete because there’s no
challenge, or you’ve
never been tapped out, or
you could’ve beaten that guy, but you would’ve broken or killed
him, or the only
time you were caught is because someone in the crowd shouted and
distracted you
...then
you might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
8.
If in public: you intentionally talk real loud (always about
yourself of course) so that everyone will “overhear” your
amazing exploits, you walk with ILS (imaginary lat syndrome), or
shadowbox, yes shadowbox, in public
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
7.
If you suddenly run an MMA school, but haven’t had a single MMA
fight (or for that matter, have only had a few fights, but even
then, your opponent was either sitting on the barstool or doing
katas in the dojo 5 minutes before)
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
6.
You go to the bars and talk loud to all girls in earshot you’ve
got a cage match coming up, whilst holding a beer in one hand
and a cig in the other
...then
you might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
5.
You "just want to fight, you don’t care who, you just want to
fight, you don’t care when or where, you just want to fight,
you’re ready, you just want to fight …all you have to worry
about is cardio, grappling, striking, and clinch"
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
4.
You’re a “national champion” by winning 1 or 2 matches against a
local yokel,
or you think
you’re good because you tap noobs off the street,
or
you’re tough because you beat up your little brother or
girlfriend
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
3.
If you do any the crap on this list, yet conveniently never go
to a LEGITIMATE SCHOOL because you secretly know you’d get
tapped by even MID-LEVEL students
...then you
might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
2.
You heard about a local fighter who took an MMA fight in a
then-national caliber league on 5 minutes notice and easily
won, then waited for that person to retire, wait a few years,
then start telling people it is YOU who did that
...then
you might be a phony, tough guy clown!!!
1.
If any of these made you angry or embarrassed
...then you are
definitely be a phony, tough guy clown!!! |
|
|

"Notice the common
denominator: these all involve people who are
utterly consumed with worrying about what other people think
about them! How are they "warriors?" They are
completely anxious and fearful!
When I started MA it
was largely for the "inward" changes it allowed for. I saw
it as a means to move towards a clear, transcended state.
Amazing there are those who claim to be involved with MA who are
absolute liars, cowards, and whack-jobs! Totally unclear,
the complete opposite of what they should be as martial artists!
Sad indeed."

[Jan 2008]
Charlie
wins in Elite XC!!!
| |
Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman improves his
professional MMA record to 5-0 with a split decision victory
over BJJ brown belt Drew Puzon, who fights out of Ricardo
Almeida BJJ. |
|
 |
On
January 25, 2008, "The Spaniard" was part of the Elite XC card
held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ. In a battle
of positioning, Charlie was able to outscramble the
well-prepared Puzon and land a variety of punches and elbows
that helped him to victory. In his toughest fight to date, "The
Spaniard" stayed busy and negated Puzon's submission attempts
without being put in any real danger.
Charlie is hoping a contract soon develops with one of the top
MMA organizations. For more info, check out
www.charlie-brenneman.com |
| |
"When Charlie first came
to PA-Grappling and was interested in MMA, he was already a
national-caliber collegiate wrestler; scrappy, competitive, and
exceptional with takedowns, grip-fighting, and clinch. However his
striking and submission work was not up to the same level. We
worked world-class submission and position defense, control, and
escapes, as well as striking, clinch work, and MMA strategies.
Charlie was like a sponge, and trained not only with us, but at Cambria,
and with others.
Constantly traveling and
training, Charlie was honest and did what it took to continue to
improve. He wasn't content to be the "1-dimensional wrestler-type"
that steals cheap decision wins by racking up double-legs and then
"actively stalls" with generic ground-and-pound
(which only works against crappy opponents, and even then, only because
of the rules and atmosphere of current MMA). Charlie wanted to
improve and get good at everything! I knew when I had to start
working hard to try and catch Charlie, very few would be able to tap him
in the cage!
On the way out to his
first fight, I remember telling Charlie if he kept at it, in roughly a
year or so he could be fighting on the world level -- and that's exactly
what he's done!!! Well I made another prediction on his TUF
audition tape; that having trained with and fought against UFC fighters
myself, I know what it takes to make it on that level, and I know that
Charlie has the potential to break into the UFC top 10 at his weight!
Watch and see it happen!"

[Dec 2007]
PA-Grappling
-- 2007 year in review!
Another busy, successful, and
rewarding year for everyone involved with PA-Grappling!!! We
continue to be by far, the most advanced, popular, and successful
submission grappling and MMA studio in the entire region of the state.
Our website gets tens of thousands of hits every month, and we are known
as the top competition school around! This is quite a feat,
considering we aren't really a competition school per se, but a place
for one to grow and learn... Though many of our students often get
the urge to compete just for the fun and experience of it.
| |
 |
On a lighter note, check out some training
footage of Bruce
Monroe working on MMA defense with
Spike Morelli,
Dave Dodson, and
Juan Robles, otherwise
known as our "Premiere Big Men" (inside joke). As
usual, Bruce's opponent dropped out of the fight. (maybe
we need to start taking down footage of our guys before they
accept any fights, to keep from scaring away the competition
--the music alone does the trick!) |
|
|
Also, here's some footage many may find
interesting. This is full contact weapons training, done
in the theme of old, medieval style weapons and armor. On
this particular day, they were doing more technical work,
troubleshooting and the like, as opposed to all-out fighting.
Make no mistake though -- my buddy had a huge dent in his
stainless steel helmet at the end of the session!
(Imagine what that would do to your skull!) |
 |
|
So we move into our third year, and hope to continue as
we already have -- to grow and increase in skill and awareness, to
be honest with ourselves and improve and to have fun while doing it.
And if we decide to keep competing, expect another load of wins and
titles from MMA, boxing, kickboxing, and submission wrestling from all
over the northeast in 2008 too!
We also want to give a shout
out to our friends over at
Cambria,
where many of our students cross-train, the gang over at
Allegheny Judo and Aikido, and
our buddies Rockwell, Gruhn, and the rest up at
Titan!
[Oct 2007]
Charlie
is the champion of Ring of Combat!!!
Charlie Brenneman

| |
 |
On Friday Nov 30,
Charlie wins Ring of Combat's "Beasts of the Northeast"
Tournament by defeating heavy-hitter Mark Berracol by TKO due to
strikes in the second round. With strategic takedowns and
constant pressure from top, Brenneman out grappled Berracol, and
dominated position, nearly submitting him several times. After
taking Berracol's back, Charlie was able to pound out a TKO by
ref stoppage.
Charlie improves
his professional record to 4-0 and hopes to make the jump to a
world-level organization in the near future. |
|
Charlie has been training
honestly and with dedication, enhancing his skills in all ranges of
combat, traveling the country and getting out there and putting it on
the line against some of the best, and he deserves this amazing victory!
WAY TO GO CHARLIE!!! (For more details, check out:

Monroe and Rembold SWEEP NLFighting MMA!!!
| |
 |
Last night, 4 fighters from
PA-Grappling fought and won in an outdoor MMA Next Level Fighting event
in OH, sweeping our divisions!!! We had 2 unanimous decisions, 1 tapout
and 1 TKO! |
|
| |
DARRIN BILLOCH fought
a very technical match, landing strikes, fighting off an experienced
wrestler's clinch, controlling the takedown, attaining the mount and
submitting his opponent in the first round!!! |
 |
|
JOSH BRETO fought with heart and determination, landing strikes,
a bunch of legkicks, and scoring numerous takedowns to gain a unanimous
decision victory!
BRUCE MONROE made his MMA debut by completely controlling his
opponent at standup, in the clinch, takedowns, and the ground, pounding
the guy black and blue and winning a blowout unanimous decision!
| |
And JEFF REMBOLD utterly dominated his opponent, cutting the
guy's face in the first round with vicious punches, and pounding the guy
on the ground with punches, knees, and elbows, while maintaining
superior positioning and forcing the guy to quit towards the end of the
2nd round!!! |
 |
|
Thanks also go to PA-Grappling assistant instructor Darren Cassidy for
helping get the guys ready, Cambria for helping Breto peak for the
event, and Jim Kelly for all his past training with Jeff.
Congratulations to these guys for GETTING OUT THERE, PUTTING IT ON THE
LINE, AND GETTING IT DONE!!!
This is just deserves for
hard, honest, and Truthful training!!!

Eddie Alvarez
seminar at PA-Grappling!
Former BODOG World Champion
Eddie Alvarez recently taught an MMA seminar at PA-Grappling!

Eddie showed a mixture of
striking, takedown, and groundwork techniques, as well as some very
helpful and effective drills. If any of you have seen his
competition footage, you know he's got a lot of devastating techniques,
especially with his hands!
Eddie fights mid-July,
working to take back his world title. Best of luck from
PA-Grappling!
[June 2007]
Charlie Brenneman
wins AGAIN in the cage!!!
Charlie Brenneman
wins again in MMA, making him 5-0 in the last 6 months in MMA!!!
| |
 |
Charlie won a unanimous
decision in an "Extreme Challenge" event in Asbury Park, NJ, with a
powerful combination of punches, kicks, and takedowns, controlling and
pounding his opponent on the ground! Charlie has been on a roll,
training and improving his game, and will soon be ready to pro! [video] |
|
WAY TO GO CHARLIE, keep up the good work!!!
[May 2007]
More Champions, Gold and
Silver at the Kumite classic!!!
| |
 |
PA-Grappling took a team out to the Kumite Classic submission grappling tournament.
Despite what had to be one of the most questionably
run tournaments in quite some time, our guys racked up a bunch of
excellent matches, bringing home 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals. [video]
|
|
| |
Darrin Billoch sweeps
the Heavyweight beginners division to take the Gold!
James O'Brien takes his 2nd Gold in as many
tournaments, winning the Youth open experience division. |
 |
|
Dave Yoder returns to action, taking the Silver in the
Middleweight Intermediates (Dave used several X-guard sweeps he learned
from Eric only weeks before!)
Josh Breto goes 3-1, using PA-Grappling submission flow series to
take the Silver.
| |
Bruce Monroe wins his
first grappling match, in the Heavyweights. He could've gone all
the way through Gold, but the matchmakers and refs apparently
intentionally matched our own guys against each other in the 2nd
round (Bruce and Darrin tossed a coin to decide who advanced.) |
 |
|
Juan Robles also
fought a really tough loss, getting caught with a takedown late in his
Intermediate match... Juan could've easily stayed in the
Beginner's bracket, but decided to challenge himself and move up ahead
of time. Even then, he had what many would consider both a
takedown and guard pass,
but wasn't awarded his deserved points (which would've given him the
win). An excellent effort!
GREAT JOB, GUYS!!! It's not about winning --it's about leaving it
all on the mat --and our guys did that here! They should all be
proud of their efforts!
Also thanks to Sonny and
Santino Achilles (of Steel City MA) for trying to bring some semblance
of order to this otherwise chaotic tournament.
[May 2007]
Even MORE VICTORIES on
the mat and in the cage!!!
We've had even more
victories, both on the mat, and in the cage! Incredible!!!
Charlie Brenneman
won a 4 man MMA cage tournament in the "Extreme Challenge",
(formerly "Combat in the Cage")
in DE over the weekend! Charlie dominated his first opponent
winning a unanimous decision, then submitted his second opponent,
winning the "Light Heavyweight Iron Man" belt!!! Congrats to
Charlie on the hard training and the awesome performance! If he
keeps going like this, we'll be seeing him again on TV!!!
| |
|
|
 |
We also had a number of
competitors go to the nationally ranked
"National Grappling
Association" tourney
several weeks ago,
bringing home 3 Gold Medals!!!
Tony Villella
made his submission wrestling debut by winning the Gold in the
Intermediate divisions by taking both
his matches by submission in mere minutes! Good job Tony!!!
Tom Sutton methodically dispatched his opponents, winning both
matches by triangle choke and taking the Gold medal!
James O'Brien, after only several months training at
PA-Grappling, entered and dominated the youth division!
Jimi submitted both opponents with triangles, also taking the Gold
medal. [video]
Thanks go to PA-Grappling
assistant instructor Allen Coble for helping these guys peak for
their events!
WAY TO GO GUYS!!!
[April 2007]
What a
difference a decade makes!!!
Manvel (or "Manny") Gamburyan
was on last night's
"The Ultimate Fighter," winning his match with a
powerful debut! Manvel was a little 'overly dramatic' during
the episode, maybe due to anxiety (hadn't fought in over 2 yrs due
to injury), or maybe to ham it up. (it is "reality" TV, after
all!) Regardless, it was good to see him get back into the
cage! I first met Manvel over 10 years ago...
| |
 |
"I used to travel all over the
country, training with whoever I could, for days, weeks,
or months at the time. (you couldn't get free moves off the internet
back then! (not sure there even was an internet back then, LOL!))
I'd go out to L.A. in the
summers and train primarily at Gokor's, but also at the Machado's, some
JKD places, and a few Gracie schools.
I can remember when I first
encountered Karo and Manvel... They were only something like 14,
yet they'd be out jogging and doing cardio throughout the day, come into
the dojo and roll in the afternoon, drill in the evening and attend
classes at night --incredible!
These kids were out training
like professionals before many of today's practitioners even knew what MMA and submission grappling was --and
has it ever paid
off!
Good things come to those who
train --AND KEEP TRAINING!!!"

[March 2007]
THREE more MMA wins in
the cage!!!
| |
 |
Four warriors fought in
the cage last night in Ohio, and put on a clinic! We went
3-1 putting up a good showing, and will post the videos soon!
[[THE
VIDEOS ARE NOW ONLINE!!!]]
|
|
Dustin Charney won a unanimous decision, landing powerful
legkicks, scoring a whole bunch of takedowns, and showing utter control
and domination on the ground, pounding his opponent and scoring points
almost at will! This was Dustin's debut fight in MMA!
John Miller came out of retirement, and pulverized his opponent
in around 50 seconds! His opponent looked pretty bad for only being in
the ring for half a minute!!! John threw a leg kick so hard it knocked
the guy completely off his feet!
Charlie Brenneman faced a hard-hitting brawler, but controlled
the takedown, worked a tight cross-side and took back, choking out his
opponent in the first round!
Darin Billock made his competition debut but lost a tough match
to a very experienced grappler and muay thai fighter (found out after
the guy had over twenty fights!!!) --but Darin will be back tougher than
before!
Congratulations to these guys for GETTING OUT THERE, PUTTING IT ON THE
LINE, AND GETTING IT DONE!!! Congrats for their hard training at
Cambria, PA-Grappling, and on their own times!
[Feb 2007]
Grappler's Quest,
spring '07...
Members from PA-Grappling
attended Grappler's Quest, one of the top submission grappling
tournaments in the world in the same league as NAGA (NJ NAGA), the
PanAms, Mundials, and the ADCC! All did well, though no one
performed to their full potential... when competing in a national
caliber tournament, even the smallest mistake will mean defeat!
Everyone who competed learned A LOT about themselves through this
competition, and this is exactly what competition is for.
On another note, the
professional superfight tournament was amazing, as Marcello Garcia
utterly dominated his opponents --a purely astounding, perfect
display of submission grappling.

Finally, Bobby Knotts,
who trains primarily under Brad Souders,
as well as at Lloyd Irvin affiliate
Evolve Academy,
used the infamous "Gokor choke" originally taught to Eric Grove in
1995, passed on to Souders, then to Knotts, who predicted the
choke on the drive to the tournament, LOL! Here you can
see the gi choke in action! (video, 2MB) Bobby
intentionally gives up guard to be able to finish with the choke.
He went 5-1 on
the day, taking Silver in white belt middleweights, after only 5
months training with gi! |

PA-Grappling 2006 year in review...
PA-Grappling is now 1
year old, having started in Jan 06. We've had great success,
pulling in people from all over the state wanting to learn top-notch
grappling and MMA techniques and strategies. Many of our
students train in other styles and at other schools, which we always
encourage. Our students are passionate and there is always a
strong presence of both intensity and comradery in our school.
On the competition front, we
went a total of 27-4 on the year, that's in formal MMA and submission
wrestling tournaments, with students who attend at least once per week,
and who were at least Yellow belt level before competing.
Good things come to those who
train... And KEEP training!!!
[Nov

Charlie Brenneman
and Josh Breto fight and WIN in their MMA debut in the "Next
Level" Fighting event !!!
Josh Breto, training out of
both PA-Grappling and Cambria Martial arts with the Regala brothers and John
Miller, used his striking to punish his opponent and keep the fight on
his feet, winning a decision in the cage!!!
Charlie Brenneman used his
outstanding takedown skills to control his match, slamming and pounding
his opponent and winning a unanimous decision!!!
WAY TO GO, GUYS!!!
[Oct
2006] John Pollock
takes Gold at the ISWA!
| |
 |
John Pollock goes
3-0, submitting all his opponents in the open experience division at
the ISWA, or International Submission Wrestling Association.
John methodically dispatched his opponents and made a very good
showing, demonstrating superior technique and application of proper
submission grappling in his first ever submission wrestling
tournament. [VIDEO] |
|
Dave Yoder also
competed, going 3-1 to take the Bronze. Dave is hoping to
return to MMA in the "Next Level Fighting" event in late November,
and used this tourney as a tune-up for the ring.
GOOD JOB GUYS!!!
[Sept
2006] Long, busy
summer at PA-Grappling!
It's been a long, busy
summer at PA-Grappling. We've seen a lot of people come and
go, many of our students continue to improve, some get closer to
competing in submission grappling and MMA.
Brad Souders competed in
several tourneys, winning runner up in one, and taking champion in his
and the absolute division in another. (we'll post the video as
soon as we get it!)
And Allen has begun a more
structured Sports Conditioning aspect to every other Thursday evening
class, so the guys are training just like the pros!
On the world front: Karo Parisyan had a tough
fight against Diego Sanchez, and Brandon Vera fights again soon in the
UFC, hoping to increase his undefeated record. Down at Lloyd's the
guys continue to compete and win on the world level. Lloyd's
school has not only HUGE mat space and world-caliber instructors in each
style, he now has a ring and a cage for guys to train in!
[May
2006] Brumbaugh
takes Gold at the Kumite Classic !!!
Corey
Brumbaugh makes his competition debut, and takes first place Gold in
the Masters! Dave Yoder comes out of retirement to compete in this
submission grappling event, taking a Bronze medal in the 185lb
Intermediates. [VIDEO]
Good
job on everyone who competed! Remember --it's not about winning,
it's about doing your best and leaving it all on the mat and learning
through the experience! (it sure is fun when you win, though!!!)
[May
2006] Another win for Josh McBride !!!
| |
 |
With
another MMA victory in "Caged Fury," Josh McBride becomes the #1 contender at 170lbs

This
high-caliber submission grappling event brought in competitors from
NY, NJ, Philly, Baltimore, D.C., and VA, and from various schools
including several Gracie and Machado affiliates! Allen won with
a mixture of takedowns, position control, and submission! Way to
go Allen!!! [VIDEO] |
|
[March

Josh
McBride does it AGAIN! Josh trained hard, honed his skills, and
AGAIN fought his way to a first round victory in NAAFS "Ultimate
Glory!"! Way to go Josh!!!
Josh
evaded his opponent's overhand right, controlled the takedown,
controlled position, took Mount, then pummeled his opponent, forcing
him to turn over, exposing his back. Josh choked him out with a
rear-naked!!! [VIDEO]
[Feb
2006] Josh McBride wins Mixed Martial Arts fight...!
Josh
McBride wins his fight at the Gladiator fighting championships with a
rear-naked choke in 55 seconds of the first round! Way to go
Josh!!! [VIDEO]
[Jan
2006] The founding of PA-Grappling...
In
early 2005, sports conditioning expert Allen Coble began
training privately with retired grappling champion Eric Grove,
sometimes up to 4 sessions per week. After training for only 3
months with Eric, Allen went on to win at the 2005 Kumite Classic in
Pittsburg, PA. [VIDEO]
Seeing
a need for real submission grappling and mixed martial arts
instruction in the central PA area, he approached Eric about finally
opening an official studio.
