PA-Grappling - Frequently Asked Questions...
Our first and most important
goal: to have fun, and to grow while doing it!
NEW
"BEGINNER'S CLASS!!!"
Our new beginner's class
("yellow belt class")
in now in full swing! Come in for a free trial session and see if
you like it! Why a beginner's class?
-
to build up a baseline level of conditioning
-
to ease into submission martial arts, to "test the waters" and see if
you like it
-
to learn the RIGHT way to do the basics
-
to work up to yellow belt
The beginner's class
culminates in graduation to
yellow belt. Afterwards, a student may randori (free roll)
and attend the "Advanced class,"
which is the
combat grappling and mixed martial arts ("ultimate fighting") class.
Special considerations can be made for those with prior experience, with
special needs, or who are specially motivated.
F.A.Q.:
1. What do you teach?
answer: We are
a "combat grappling" martial arts school, teaching martial arts that
involve striking, wrestling, and submission holds. Many of our
students also train in boxing, muay thai, and weapons.
More specifically, we teach
Russian Combat Sambo, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts, or
"No-holds barred" or "Ultimate" fighting. (or whatever else people want
to call it!)
Russian Combat Sambo:
is a combative grappling system devised in Russia, from a scientific mix
of wrestling, Judo, ju-jitsu, and effective standup fighting and
self-defense, as well as 'combat psychology,' resulting in a unique
system which has been borrowed from by nearly all successful NHB
fighters and competitors. Nowadays, there is sport sombo (similar to
Judo) as well as a 'street' or 'survival' type Sambo, as well as
sport-fighting Combat Sambo. This is what we focus on, as taught by
Gokor Chivichyan
.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu:
is the ground grappling and fighting system adapted by the famous Gracie
family, exposed to the world through the original UFC, and honed and
adapted in Brazil, and the world, ever since. BJJ is, by far,
the most scientific ground grappling and submission fighting system on
the planet. BJJ is NOT regular ju-jitsu, and unless someone has trained
specifically in BJJ, then they're not BJJ. Our BJJ comes
primarily from
Lloyd Irvin.
MMA, or "Mixed Martial Arts:" (formerly called "No-hold Barred"
or "Ultimate
Fighting") not a
true martial art per se, but rather, the scientific mix of effective
fighting techniques from all ranges of confrontation; kicking, punching,
trapping (or clinch), and ground grappling. Also focuses on combat
psychology and training, and is highly adaptable to each individual. A
scientific mix of western boxing, muay thai, Jeet Kune Do, Philipino and
Indonesian arts, various forms of wrestling, sambo and BJJ. Your "mixed
martial arts" system and strategy may look very different from someone
else who trains at the exact same school, yet both can be effective.

2. What are
classes like?
answer:
We have a "Beginner's class" to bring new students up to speed.
Once they progress to 'yellow belt' (the first rank), they can
attend the "Advanced class." This usually takes around 2-3
months. Exceptions can be made for students with prior
experience, or with particular goals, or who are extremely
determined to progress quickly.
Our advanced classes
usually consist of 3 phases: first, a functional,
intelligent warm-up, second, new techniques and
instruction, and third, free-style practice (or
"randori") or functional live drills.
We don't waste your
time and energy on foolish, non-functional exercises; everything
we do is completely functional, derived from world-class,
Olympic caliber training, instruction, and techniques. And our
martial arts styles are the best on the planet.
3. Who can
train?
answer:
Anyone, any age, so long as they're open minded!
Our classes can be
approached purely as physical exercise, sportive competition,
self-defense, and/or hands-on spiritual growth. As discussed
next, YOU dictate your involvement and path of growth.
4. Will I get
punched or get hurt?
answer:
LOL, not at all! (well, not unless you want to!)
Our most important
rule is that you enjoy your experience. Our primary goal is for
you to grow as a person.
For those who wish to
train harder, or with more contact, there is the Mixed Martial
Arts class, and the "Competition
Team." We also have open mats on Friday evenings,
where you can work on whatever you want to.
One of our primary
principles is that you dictate your level of involvement,
intensity, and growth rate. This can be difficult for people
looking for someone to "tell them what to do." (or worse yet,
how to think!) This is NOT our method. We do teach specific
techniques, but you, yourself, learn them, adapt them, make them
work, and in the process, work on your own mental and physical
growth, at whatever rate you wish. This allows (and requires)
you to become a "light unto yourself."
And remember, you
don't always have to train (physically) harder to get better.
This is a common mistake people make, and often leads to
burnout.
5.
Do I need experience, or be a gifted athlete?
answer:
Not at all.
Prior experience
doesn't necessarily give one an advantage. First, many who have
learned improper grappling often have to unlearn bad habits , so
past experience can actually inhibit growth for some.
Occasionally, people have learned moves wrong, sometimes not.
Regardless, experience is in no way necessary.
As for being a 'good
athlete,' obviously, having good 'kinesthetic perception' allows
one to learn moves faster and easier... But anyone can still
learn those same moves with a little more time. Ultimately, the
only thing that limits one's growth is one's mind and spirit.
That is the deciding factor.
6.
How long will it take for... 'belt,' 'compete,' etc?
answer:
It depends on you. But it won't happen in 5 minutes, 5 days, or
in 5 weeks. The more dedicated you are, the faster you
advance. Common sense.
7.
Do you have a ranking belt system?
answer:
Yes, students who are consistent and work on the established
goals and criteria will be ranked with belts!
-
yellow I & II
-
green I & II
-
blue I & II
-
purple
-
brown
-
